Tennis Elbow Q & A
What is tennis elbow?
Tennis elbow is a form of tendinitis, a condition that occurs when tendons become inflamed or irritated. Your tendons are the thick fibrous cords of tissue that attach your muscle to your bone.
When you have tennis elbow, you typically have pain on the outside of your elbow. It’s most common for discomfort to occur where your forearm tendons attach to your elbow joint, but it can also spread through your forearm into your wrist.
Besides pain, tennis elbow can lead to weaknesses that make it difficult to hold things or turn doorknobs. This weakness can affect your ability to grip objects and even cause problems with shaking hands.
What causes tennis elbow?
Repetitive strain causes tennis elbow. This injury is due to the repeated contractions of the muscles in your forearm used to straighten and raise your hand and wrist. When this action happens repeatedly, tiny tears can develop in your tendons where they attach to the outside of your elbow.
While playing tennis can cause of tennis elbow, other activities with repetitive arm motions that can lead to the condition include:
- Painting
- Plumbing
- Carpentry
- Cooking
You can also develop tennis elbow through repetitive use of a computer mouse.
In severe cases of tennis elbow, your tendon can rupture and require surgical treatment to remove damaged tissue and repair your injury.
