Pap Smear Q & A
What is a pap smear?
A Pap smear is a test that checks for cancer cells in your cervix, the lower part of your uterus. It is often the most effective way to identify cervical cancer in the earliest stages, when it’s most treatable.
Dr. Shilad recommends a Pap smear for all women starting at age 21, or when you become sexually active. He recommends follow up tests every three years until you reach ages 65-70 and have negative tests for three consecutive years. He may administer a Pap smear more frequently if you have a history of cervical cancer or if the condition runs in your family.
How do I prepare for a Pap smear?
To ensure the most accurate results, you should discuss any medications you’re taking, including birth control, with Dr. Shilad. You should also avoid douching, tampon use, and sexual intercourse for at least 24 hours before your Pap smear.
If you have your period on the day of your scheduled Pap smear, you should reschedule the test for another day.
What can I expect during a Pap smear?
Dr. Shilad performs a Pap smear as part of your pelvic exam. Using a long cotton swab, he collects cells from your cervix and sends them to a medical laboratory for review. The test can be uncomfortable but should cause you no pain. It only takes a few seconds to collect cell samples.
Following the test, you may experience light bleeding, which is normal. You can return to your regular activities after the test without restrictions.
What if my Pap test results are abnormal?
Normal Pap smear results mean the test didn’t detect any abnormal cells. In most cases, you won’t have another Pap smear for three years. If your tests come back showing abnormal results, Dr. Shilad recommends additional testing to rule out other underlying conditions.
An abnormal Pap test doesn’t always indicate the presence of cancer. In some cases, abnormal Pap smear results indicate other gynecological issues, including an infection.
Dr. Shilad reviews your test information with you and discusses the next steps for addressing abnormal Pap smear results.
